No make-up work for today, guys. We will proceed with our profile workshop on Wednesday, so please be prepared to talk about the three student drafts on that day. And I will likely assign you a healthy amount of reading on Wednesday for Friday, including excerpts by our upcoming visiting writers.
As previously announced, this Thursday, March 18th, novelist Mary Beth Keane and memoirist Gina Welch will be visiting JMU to read from their books. The reading and conversation will take place at 2 p.m. in Transitions on the second floor of Warren Hall.
Please either:
1. Attend the reading. It'll be worth your while. And no writing necessary.
or
2. Read Gina Welch's five blog posts at http://trueslant.com/ginawelch/2009/10/16/the-case-of-the-vanishing-jacket/ and write a two-page, double-spaced paper commenting on her blog. What purpose does her blog seem to serve? What common themes does she seem to address? How would you describe her voice and style? You might want to do some clicking around True/Slant to gain some context. This is a good preparation for our next unit, in which we will make careful study of blogs. (You can reach all five entries by clicking on the titles under My Most Popular Posts, on the right side when you scroll down.) The paper is due in class on Monday, March 22.
Questions? E-mail me. Thanks for your flexibility. And I'll see you on Wednesday.
