Readings for Friday: Science & Nature

For Friday, March 26, please print (yes, print), read, and be prepared to discuss the two essays I e-mailed you in PDF.  They are "Animalcules and Other Little Subjects" by Mark A. Smith and "Red Is the New Green" by Patrick Symmes. Both are included in the anthology The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2009. Make copious notes to guide you in your reading; I'll be looking for these readings in your notebook at the next notebook check.

Are these examples of popular writing? How do the authors use narrative elements in their essays? What do these essays have in common with other genres?

Please also read two short excerpts from your textbook Popular Writing in America: the intro to “Best-sellers,” pgs. 361 – 366; and the intro to “Classics,” pgs. 487–490. These are largely unrelated to the science and nature essays, but will help us to conclude our unit on narrative nonfiction by asking us to reconsider what exactly popular writing is.

Remember that your second portfolios, containing two pieces of narrative nonfiction, are due on Monday, March 29.
